Photometers

Photometers are instruments used for accurate and reliable water quality analysis by measuring the concentration of various chemical substances based on their color density. They offer precise digital readouts, eliminating the subjective human error associated with traditional visual color matching test kits.

How Photometers Work

Photometers operate on the Beer-Lambert law, which states that the amount of light absorbed by a solution is proportional to the concentration of the substance and the path length of the light through the sample.
  1. Blanking:  First, a water sample without the reagent is used to "blank" the machine, establishing a baseline light setting.
  2. Reagent Addition:  A specific chemical reagent is added to the water sample, which causes a color change that corresponds to the substance being measured (e.g., chlorine, nitrate, phosphate).
  3. Measurement: A light source within the photometer shines a specific wavelength of light through the colored sample. A detector then measures the amount of light transmitted or absorbed, providing a digital readout of the chemical concentration.

Types of Photometers

Photometers come in various designs to suit different applications, from field testing to laboratory analysis.
  • Mini Photometers Testers:

These are lightweight and designed for field use, offering durability and simple operation for quick on-site analysis.

  • Portable Photometers:

These are larger, more advanced instruments designed for laboratory use. They often feature multiparameter capabilities and can double as a professional pH meter, saving bench space.

  • Multiparameter Photometers:

These devices are pre-programmed with numerous methods to measure many different water quality parameters (e.g., pH, nitrate, phosphorous) using a single instrument.

  • Multiparameter Photometer Kits
